Matters of faith to take centre-stage at annual Blasket Island commemmoration

Matters of faith to take centre-stage at annual Blasket Island commemmoration

'Matters of Faith on the Great Blasket' is the theme for this year's Blasket Commemoration, an annual colloquium which will be held in The Great Blasket Centre, Dún Chaoin  from the 24th-26th of September. Not only will various aspects of the beliefs of the Islanders themselves be discussed during the weekend, but the religious structures and folk beliefs of the wider community in West Kerry and indeed the rest of Ireland will also be dissected as part of the Commemoration. The pre-Famine proselytizing drive in West Kerry by those of the Protestant persuasion will also be examined. Two separate Christian denominations were active in The Great Blasket Island during the second half of the 19th Century. Although the majority of the island community were Catholics, they had neither a Church nor a resident Priest on the island. A Protestant mission was established on the Blasket in the 1840s, and some of the islanders found themselves following the teachings of this Communion. Indeed, it was this mission which introduced the reading and writing of Irish to the island community. Running alongside Christianity in the lives of the islanders was a strong traditional folk belief system, and these beliefs are evident in the writings of the Blasket authors. The Commemoration will be officially opened by Dr. Ian Malcolm, author, journalist and an authority on the Irish language in Northern Ireland. Dr. Malcolm is the author of 'Towards Inclusion: Protestants and the Irish Language', and he has traveled widely speaking on the Irish language from a Protestant perspective. Along with Dr. Malcolm, lectures and talks by Dr. Pádraig Ó Héalaí, Prof. Irene Whelan, Dr. Breandán Ó Cíobháin, Dr. Seán Ó Duinn, Billy Mag Fhloinn & Dr. Siobhán de Barra will also be held during the event. As well as the lectures, the Commemoration will include stage productions, a guided walk and an interdenominational service. A film of the last Stations held on the Blaskets in 1951 will be shown, with live commentary from Gearóid Cheaist Ó Catháin, the last child born on the island. Gearóid, 'The Loneliest Boy in The World', is seen in the film as a four-year-old, being treated with great respect by the ageing island community, which was predominantly male at this stage. “Many lessons may be learned from the belief systems of various communities at various stages of our history” says Frances Uí Chinnéide, Treasurer of Coiste Cheiliúradh an Bhlascaoid. “We hope to have lively discussions during the weekend on all aspects of personal and community belief, and that the programme will be of interest to everyone.” A simultaneous translation service will be available throughout the weekend. The Blasket Centre has been hosting the Blasket Commemoration for sixteen years. A particular subject is chosen each year as the theme of the Commemoration. Previous year’s Commemorations have included the lives and writings of Muiris Ó Suilleabháin, Peig Sayers and Tomás Ó Criomhthain as well as more general topics such as Music of the Islands, Emigration and Wildlife of the Islands. For more information or to register for the Blasket Commemoration, contact (066) 9156444, (066) 9156100 or ceiliuradh@cfcd.ie .

There were many inspirational stories on the day: Clochán-Breannainn's Adrian O'Connor completed the full marathon despite living with ABI - Acquired Brain Injury. The local man completed the gruelling circuit, returning to Dingle to a hero's welcome. Wheelchair athlete Gerry Ford from Blarney in Co. Cork was another inspiration on the day; his completion of the 2010 Dingle Marathon was his175th completed full marathon! Others were attempting the marathon for the first time; local woman Geraldine Fitzgerald from Leathaoibh, Ballyferriter set her sights on the full course after crossing the line at the half-way stage. Lifted by the spirit of her fellow competitors, she completed the full course on her first outing. There was also heartbreak on the day; Dingle man Jonathan Flannery, who was competing in the Ultra Marathon (which included a run over Conor Pass) was injured in the final stretch, not far from the finish line. His effort however was still immense and he is still considered a local hero. These are only a few of the many personal stories that make the Dingle Marathon the event that it is. The Half Marathon was a great fantastic event in itself, many running and walking towards the finish line at Krugers in Dún Chaoin. The Dingle Marathon had a large international field of competitors this year and the feedback has been very positive with many of the more seasoned marathon runners commenting that they had never competed upon such a beautiful course. A huge effort went into organising the event with local volunteers dedicated their time (along with the co-operation of the emergency services and An Gardai Siochana) into ensuring the event ran smoothly.

The results of the Full Marathon can be downloaded at the link below; for the full results listings of the Half Marathon and Ultra Marathon visit: www.dinglemarathon.ie/results.html.

Once you have conquered this section, you will be at a point where you can see over the entire landscape, the finish line is in the distance with a long straight home. The full marathon is a tough run, it has a lot of challenging sections. It is however a hugely rewarding achievement.  The Ultra Marathon (start time is set for 7am sharp - chip timing is in place) will join up with the main Half/Full event in Dingle town. Proposed Special Protection Area for Castlemaine Harbour to be discussed in Keel

Proposed Special Protection Area for Castlemaine Harbour to be discussed in Keel

There has been quite a lot of concern and curiosity locally in relation to the recent announcement by the Department of the Environment regarding the proposed Special Protection Area for bird life in Castlemaine Harbour. As a result, and in an effort to give people an opportunity to find out more about the issues involved, Dingle LEA Councillor Brendan Griffin is organising a Public Information Evening on the subject for people to drop in with any queries that they may have. The National Parks and Wildlife Service has kindly agreed to provide a member of staff for the occasion, which will run from 3pm to 7pm in Keel Community Centre on Thursday, September 16th. Hopefully, the NPWS representative will be able to answer any questions from members of the public. By that stage, Cllr. Griffin will also have an official response from Kerry County Council on what the planning implications of the SPA would be. It is hoped that the event will be helpful to everyone concerned and will provide clarity on the issues involved. This Public Information Event takes place at Keel Community Centre on Thursday, September 16th from 3pm to 7pm. For more information contact Brendan Griffin MCC on 087 652 8841. Dingle's Diarmuid Murphy named as Kerry selector

Dingle

Dingle's Diarmuid Murphy has been named as Eamonn Fitzmaurice's replacement as selector for Kerry. The All-Star Goalkeeper and multiple All-Ireland Medal holder will join Jack O'Connor's back-room team as the Kerry manager returns with a new three-year term. Ger O'Keeffe is also to continue as a selector. Jack O'Connor's future had been in doubt following a shock All-Ireland SFC quarter-final defeat to Down. However  he made it clear that, having guided the Kerry to three Sam Maguire Cup triumphs, he wants to return for another glory bid in 2011.The man from Dromid was returned with a unanimous vote at a county board meeting in Tralee this week. Kerry county board chairman Jerome Conway confirmed that the appointments are for an extra year from the previous two-year term, as the county rebuild their side. The suspensions of Paul Galvin and Tomás Ó Sé, coupled with the retirement of Darragh Ó Sé, Diarmuid Murphy from
inter county football hampered Kerry's assault on this year's championship. Further losses incurred by the return of Taghg Kennelly and Tommy Walsh to the AFL saw a depleted Kerry face harsh criticism throughout the championship race. However those in GAA circles are slow to write off Kerry as they seek redemption with a 37th All-Ireland title up for grabs in 2011. Pictured: Diarmuid Murphy in action: pic courtesy of RTÉ Sport.
