Dingle Bay Rovers put in a stellar performance to clinch the Division One title

Dingle Bay Rovers put in a stellar performance to clinch the Division One title

Dingle were crowned Division One Champions yesterday after a well deserved 4-1 win against AC Athletic from Causeway in the Division Final in Tralee's Mounthawk Park.
But it did not look that way in the first half as Dingle started the game tentatively, finding it difficult to hold onto the ball in wet and damp conditions.
As the game moved on Dingle got more of the ball and had the best chance of the first half when Pa Sheehy crashed the ball of the Athletic crossbar. The second half started as the first ended with Dingle pushing forward. It was Pa Sheehy
who got the break-through with a great individual goal beating two players before blasting the ball through Athletics's keeper. The second soon followed Mark Sullivan from a free kick, deceiving everyone, to find the back of the net.
Athletic got a life line with 15 minutes to go when they were awarded a penalty and they made no mistake with it, converting it to bring to score back to 2-1.
As Athletic pushed forward Dingle caught them on the break when Paul Geaney got taken down for a penalty
and James Coffey stepped up to put the game to bed. If there was any doubt James Coffey got his second firing home from long range to the bottom right corner of goal, making it 4-1 for the Dingle men.
It's been a successful season for the club, only weeks ago Dingle Bay Rovers silenced a strong challenge from Inter Kenmare, beating them 0-5 away, the win has guaranteeing them promotion to the Kerry Premier B Division next season.
Best for Dingle yesterday were Donnacha Higgins and Mark Sullivan who was flawless in defense, while Dara Flaherty had a solid game in mid field. Dingle are still involved in two cup competitions and in this form will take some stopping. Match Report: David O'Neill, Photo: Declan Noonan. Following his motion to Kerry Co Council and on-going representations to Deputy John O’Donoghue  €4,000 is to be provided to investigate the overflowing of the Abhainn Solais river at Bridge Street Milltown and at Rathpogue.  This has been an on-going problem but was greatly increased during the severe weather conditions earlier in the year.  Cllr O’Shea is confident that this study will lead to a financial contribution from the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government toward the solving of the flooding problem in Milltown.

Minister Lenihan proposes a Pilot Salmon Fishery in Castlemaine Harbour in 2010

Minister Lenihan proposes a Pilot Salmon Fishery in Castlemaine Harbour in 2010

Conor Lenihan, the Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, responded to requests on how a commercial salmon fishery could be operated on stocks in the Castlemaine Harbour Special Area of Conservation. Speaking at a meeting with local fishermen in Cromane Community Centre, the Minister advised that he has sought details from the fisheries boards as to how the fishery can be undertaken in a sustainable manner, maximizing the opportunities for commercial fishing while ensuring that stocks are not over-exploited. The Minister said that, under section 18 of the Fisheries Act 1980, a pilot fishery will be permitted in a particular area of Castlemaine Harbour to determine how a salmon fishery could be operated on salmon stocks in the harbour, making the most of the opportunities for commercial fishing while ensuring that at-risk stocks are not compromised and surplus stocks are not over-exploited. The pilot fishery would identify the proportion of salmon in catches from the Laune, Maine and other rivers entering Castlemaine. As part of the exercise additional genetic analysis on the salmon populations on the Behy and Emlagh rivers will be undertaken to confirm if both stocks are discrete from stocks in other rivers. A detailed scientific and management plan including protocols for the operation of the pilot fishery will need to be drafted in consultation with the South Western Regional Fisheries Board and the Cromane fishermen. The Minister said “the results from this analysis will inform all stakeholders (commercial and recreational) on where a commercial fishery might best operate in the common estuary while safeguarding the spawning requirements of stocks”. The Minister added that he “looked forward to receiving the Boards’ detailed management plan which will take the biological concerns into account and will specify the management protocols for the operation of the fishery, including the protection requirements. This plan will need to be drafted in consultation with the South Western Regional Fisheries Board, the Central Fisheries Board and the Cromane fishermen”. Picture courtesy of www.inchphotos.com.

Major Bridge Street development gets the go-ahead from An Bórd Pleanala

A major development on Dingle's Bridge Street has been sanctioned by An Bord Pleanala. Kerry County Council had initially refused  permission for the mixed use development last December citing overdevelopment; the lack of urban design and the non-provision of off-street car parking - potentially leading to further traffic congestion. The developer appealed it to An Bord Pleanala. While the An Bord Pleanala inspector recommended it didn't get the go-ahead, the board of An Bord Pleanala have decided not to accept the recommendation. The granting of permission to the development is conditional; 17 conditions are cited, among them, the developer pay a special contribution to the county for the provision of parking. The Bridge Street development's plans include the renovation of several adjoining buildings to incorporate a micro-brewery, public tasting area with offices, a fully licensed bar and restaurant, three retail units and a youth café.

Dingle sings the Blues as new festival hits Baile na nGall

Dingle sings the Blues as new festival hits Baile na nGall

Ireland’s newest music festival takes place on the June bank holiday weekend in the stunning surrounds of Corca Dhuibhne (Dingle Peninsula). The Kerry Blues Festival is a four day event comprising of blues music, talks and walks, centred on the picturesque gaeltacht (irish-speaking) village of Ballydavid (Baile na nGall) which is on Smerwick Harbour, approximately 10km from Dingle. Acts from the USA, the UK and Ireland will play over the four nights. A feature of the festival will be the cross pollination between acts, which should lead to some interesting late night jams. Firstly about the festival; this is old school blues. Music will take place on all evenings of the bank holiday from Friday June 4th to Monday June 7th 2010 inclusive. Headliners include Philip Donnelly (one of Ireland’s most accomplished international guitar exports), American Ben Prevo, Dr Blue and the Prescription from London, Michael Smurthwaite and friends from Dingle by way of England, Bluestone, Rob Lowther and the Transformation Blues Band. Secondly, the venue; Ballydavid is 10km from Dingle on Smerwick Harbour in the shadow of Mount Brandon. Festival goers can look west as the sun sets on the Three Sisters and the Blasket Islands. The hinterland of Ballydavid includes many beaches and walks which we expect will be a major attraction. Featured highlights will include 'The Saint’s Walk' on Sunday guided by local historian TP Ó Conchúir, and a talk entitled Blues on Vinyl on Saturday by Eoin Moloney. All profits go to local charity The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust for Malawi. Visit www.kerrybluesfestival.com for more information. Dea-sceál eile do Dháithí Ó Sé!

Dea-sceál eile do Dháithí Ó Sé!

Is ar Dháithí Ó Sé ó TG4 a bronnadh an chéad ghradam Gael-Réalta Gala mar a fógraíodh ag Gradaim Chumarsáide an Oireachtais i gcomhar le Gala in Farmleigh i mBaile Átha Cliath, Dé hAoine, 21 Bealtaine. Seo an dara dea-scéal in aon tseachtain amháin ag Dáithí – an scéal faoi Rós Thrá Lí agus anois an fógra gurb eisean Gael-Réalta Gala na bliana seo!
Ba é Aengus Mac Grianna ó Nuacht RTÉ a bhí i mbun an tsearmanais ag na Gradaim a eagraíonn Oireachtas na Gaeilge trína ndéantar ceiliúradh ar na láithreoirí teilifíse agus raidió, ar na haisteoirí agus na hiriseoirí agus ar an lucht déanta clár a bhfuil cion oibre thar na bearta déanta acu in earnáil na cumarsáide Gaeilge le bliain anuas.
"Is mór an scéal é seo dom,” a deir Dáithí Ó Sé. "Fógraíodh níos luaithe an tseachtain seo gur mé a bheidh i m'fhear an tí ag Rós Thrá Lí agus is barr ar an dea-scéala Gradam Gael-Réalta Gala. Táim ag freastal ar Ghradaim Chumarsáide an Oireachtais le blianta agus is iontach an cor nua a cuireadh iontu i mbliana leis an nGradam nua seo. Tá mé an-bhuíoch de gach duine a vótáil ar mo shon," a deir sé.
Fuair Na Cloigne (TG4), an scéinséir osnádúir arna stiúradh ag Robert Quinn agus arna léiriú ag Ciarán Ó Cofaigh gradam Dhráma Teilifíse na Bliana. Seó Spóirt, a chuireann Dara Ó Cinnéide, iar-chaptaein Chiarraí, i láthair, a bhuaigh an gradam do Shraith Teilifíse na Bliana. Ba leis Na Cloigne arís an gradam d'Aisteoir na Bliana nuair a scuab Darach Ó Dubháin an chraobh leis as ucht a chuid aisteoireachta i bpáirt Sheáin Uí Dhónaill. Ainmníodh Emer Ní Chonaola, láithreoir nuachta TG4 mar Phearsa Teilifíse na Bliana.
Rug Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí ó RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta dhá ghradam leis - Sraith Raidió na Bliana do Rónan Beo @ 3 agus Pearsa Raidió na Bliana. Bronnadh gradam Iriseoir na Bliana ar Bhreandán Delap ó Beo! agus ba é Alan Titley a gnóthaigh an gradam do Cholúnaí na Bliana as ucht a chuid saothair ar an Irish Times.
"Tá muid thar a bheith sásta le gradaim na bliana seo agus leis an ngradam nua, an Gael-Réalta Gala 2010,” arsa Liam Ó Maolaodha, Stiúrthóir Oireachtas na Gaeilge. "Tréaslaím a ghradam le Dáithí agus leis na buaiteoirí eile arb iad a gcomhghleacaithe féin i saol na cumarsáide a thug an t-aitheantas dóibh as ardfhiúntas a gcuid saothair," a deir sé.
Ba í seo an chéad bhliain a raibh baint leis na gradaim ag Gala, ceann de na grúpaí miondíolacháin is tréine a bhfuil forás fúthu in Éirinn faoi láthair, agus tugadh isteach an gradam Gael-Réalta Gala 2010 d'fhonn na gradaim a chur ar a n-aird do phobal níos leithne. Bhí Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin, Gráinne Seoige, Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh agus Michelle Beamish ar an ngearrliosta don Ghradam sin freisin. Is é Gael-Réalta Gala an t-aon ghradam ar trí vótaí an phobail a roghnaíodh an buaiteoir agus chaith daoine ar fud na tíre ar fad vótaí lena aghaidh.
"Tá an ceangal le hOireachtas na Gaeilge i ndáil le Gradaim Chumarsáide an Oireachtais i gcomhar le Gala ar cheann de na príomhbhearta againn i bhfeachtas dar teideal Gala Goes Gael agus ba chúis ríméid dúinn an dea-thoradh a bhí air," arsa Gary Desmond, Príomhfheidhmeannach Gala. "Ghlac na siopaí páirt go fonnmhar ann agus ba mhór i gceist againn go mbeadh páirt mhór ag an lucht siopadóireachta sna gradaim,” a deir sé.
Chuir bronnadh Bhuaic-Ghradam Cumarsáide an Oireachtais ar fhoireann an nuachtáin Foinse (1996-2009) críoch leis an ócáid. Pictiúr: Comhghairdeachas, a Dháithí! Dáithí Ó Sé ó TG4, a bhuaigh an chéad ghradam Gael-Réalta Gala. In aice leis tá Michelle Beamish ó Seacht agus an dráma nua ar TG4, An Crisis agus Eileen Dunne ó RTÉ.

HIQA reviewing current status of Dingle Community Hospital

HIQA reviewing current status of Dingle Community Hospital

H.I.Q.A (the agency which has been established by the Government to oversee and implement the health and safety rules pertaining to long-term patients in new and existing nursing homes) is now doing a check-list on the new Dingle Community Hospital according to a statement released today by Dingle LEA Councillor Seamus Cosai Fitzgerald. "Before the new Hospital opens it has to meet all the H.I.Q.A standards" said Cllr. Fitzgerald. "An examination is being carried out at the moment, to ensure that all the rules are met and that the hospital will meet the highest standard possible. I have also learned that the H.S.E is negotiating with the unions in relation to the staffing requirements for the New Hospital. The long-term bed capacity in the new Hospital is increasing from 43 beds to 69 beds resulting in an increase in the staff which must be employed." Built at a cost of €16.4 million (€12.4m construction and €4m design fees, equipping and fitting out), the purpose built facility is designed to incorporate three separate care modules. Two designed primarily for continuing care and one to provide a range of community supports, including convalescent care, respite care, hospice care and direct GP admissions. The Hospital will also comprise a day care centre for older people, a mental health day care centre and an ambulance base. The mental health day care centre will replace the existing, smaller mental health day care centre which is located in the current community hospital and the day care centre will compliment the existing range of community based, day support services being provided throughout the peninsula by a range of voluntary organisations.
The site was donated by the O’Connor family in Dingle. It had been anticipated by the HSE that the facility would open in the Summer of 2009; since then a variety of delays have been the source of local frustration. Pictured: Professor Brendan Drumm, CEO of the Health Service Executive visiting the site of the new Community Hospital on Monday 23rd June 2008.
