In the last two weeks Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne fielded rugby teams for the first time ever. The U-14 team captained by Seamus Moriarty competed in the West Kerry 7-a side blitz where they won the plate competition defeating sides from all over West Kerry. The following week an U-18 side led by Mikey Flannery battled with a strong Canadian touring side and came out victors 12-7 in a bruising encounter. The Colaiste Ide girls team coached by Danno Keeffe also played the Canadian School girls and lost out narrowly showing great heart and determination. These games are a huge boost for rugby in West Kerry and especially for Rugbai Chorca Dhuibhne, well done to all involved.
In another silverware related story the U-19 Rugbai Chorca Dhuibhne club side led by the magnificent Conachubar Begley beat a much fancied Killorglan side in the West Kerry U-19 cup. Coach Mike Dooley had an erray of talent on display and the likes of Tom Kavanagh, Colm Corduff, Shane Hand, Chris Thomas and captain Begley had way too much class for their counterparts running out 18-16 winners thanks to a Mikey Flannery penalty, try and conversion and a wonderful individual try from Chris Thomas.
Unfortunately for Rugbai Chorca Dhuibhne the Seniors are not taking lead from the under age players, losing to Abbeyfeale and Kilrush recently in games that should have been won. A destructive injury list has left the squad depleted and a big recruitment drive for new players will take place over the summer.
