Pressure mounting to bring back Aifreann as Gaeilge on RnG

Pressure mounting to bring back Aifreann as Gaeilge on RnG

Momentum is building behind a campaign to reinstate the broadcast of Mass in Irish on Radio na Gaeltachta. According to RTÉ/Raidió na Gaeltachta the decision to cut the live broadcast of Aifreann as Gaeilge was financial - now Bishop of Kerry Bill Murphy has thrown his weight behind the campaign to put it back on the airwaves.
In addition, Dingle Canon Tomás Looney is quoted in Friday’s Irish Times as saying that the broadcast of Aifreann as Gaeilge was a “valued and marvellous service for Irish speakers, not just in the Gaeltacht, but worldwide.”
The 11am Mass service had been broadcast by Raidió na Gaeltachta from churches in Irish speaking areas for many years. The decision to cut the Mass broadcast, which is believed to have been made mid-January, now means that Mass in Irish will only be broadcast once a month.
Canon Looney has written to Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív, RTÉ director general Cathal Goan, the Irish MEPS and politicians who have Gaeltacht areas in their constituencies.
