DINGLE REGATTA 2010

Dingle New event Venue: DINGLE TOWN
Date: 14/08/2010 Dingle Regatta 2010 Skies will be blue and the sea calm this weekend for the Annual Dingle Regatta (14th & 15th August) Writes Ciarán Williams. This is an annual celebration of the skill and expertise of the boatmen from Chorca Dhuibhne operating the 4 hand Namhóga in Dingle Harbour. Watching them navigate their way around the harbour in their highly competitive races is very exciting and the atmosphere is always fantastic when boats clash and water splashes! Competitors from West Kerry are joined by crews from Maherees and as far away as Donegal to the Annual event. The Regatta is held over two days starting on Saturday with the hardy youngsters of Cumann Rámhaíochta Corca Dhuibhne taking to the water with 7 races on the card ranging from U-12 to U-18. The skill of these rowers is always exceptional and a tribute to their trainers Maunza Heidtke and Eddie Hutchinson. On Sunday the more experienced rowing takes place with the main race being the 4 man namhóg championship of Kerry. Also on the card that day is the Aloysious Ó Cíobháin Memorial Cup and the 4 woman championship of Kerry. To finish the regatta off there will be a rás meascaithe as hata with all the experienced rowers mixed up together. All the races  are sponsored by local business outlets. Conor Haughey will attend the regatta to start the main race of the day on Sunday carrying on in the tradition established by his late father, former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey who came to Dingle every summer to open the weekend’s racing. The Charlie Haughey memorial cup will be presented to the winners of the women’s 4 hand namhóg race. Racing gets underway at 2pm each day and there are many vantage points from the marina breakwater.

An annual celebration of the skill and expertise of local boatmen operating Náomhóga. Watch them as they carefully and fearlessly navigate their way round the harbour in a series of highly competitive races. Afterwards relax in one of the cosy pubs and embrace the exciting atmosphere. Thrills and spills at Dingle Regatta 2009
 by Marian O'Flaherty

Mixed weather conditions greeted competitors at Dingle Regatta last Saturday and Sunday, however this did nothing the dampen the spirits of many children and seasoned veterans who took to the high seas in their Naomhóga over the weekend.
With a packed racing schedule on offer, competitors from West Kerry, the Maharees and Galway converged on Dingle Marina over Saturday and Sunday to enjoy a weekends racing in the Harbour.
Conor Haughey and his family were among those in attendance at Dingle's Marina over the weekend, carrying on in the tradition established by his late father, former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey who came to Dingle ever summer to open the weekend's racing at the regatta.
Weather conditions on Saturday were changeable with wind and rain blasting the young competitors who turned out in force to take part in the seven scheduled races, from U-14s to U-16s.
The hardy youngsters of Cumann Ramhaíochta Corca Dhuibhne had no qualms about tacking the ocean waves taking the bad weather in their stride, producing a great days racing.
Sunday brought with it more mixed weather conditions and the rain came down in buckets as Conor Haughey stepped forward at 2pm, firing the shotgun which traditionally heards the start of Dingle Regatta's main day of racing.
With eight races on the card, the action heated up with days two main races, the Four Man Naomhóg Championship of Kerry and Four Woman Naomhóg Championship of Kerry (with the Charlie Haughey Memorial Cup up for grabs) taking centre stage.
The men of the Maharees clinched the men's title with Jackie Goodwin, Danny Scanlon, Kieran Browne and Vincent Wildes first past the finish line in a thrilling race.
Meanwhile the women of West Kerry, Gillian O'Brien, Jane Fitzgerald, Edel Lovett and Shelia Dorgan emerged victorious in the women's championship.
Other races of note on the day included the Fear agus Bean Aloysious Ó Cíobháin Memorial Cup, won by Gerry Flannery and Shelia Dorgan of Dingle.
The novice race proved another highlight as it affords those rowers with less experience to compete on their own level. Its eventual winners were Páidí Moran and Tina Kavanagh.
As the afternoon continued, those in attendance were treated to some sunshine.
The LE Orla was also docked, allowing speactators to board and sneak a peak into navy life on the high seas.
A bouncy castle and carnival stands completed the fun fuelled atmosphere.
With excellent particiaption at all racing levels, the future of traditional Naomhóg racing in West Kerry is certainly secured for many years to come if this years Dingle Regatta is anything to go by.
